A Senior in Disguise
Pony tailed, tangled, scabby and wounded coat all told of an older dog. Sorrow was etched in her eyes and they held a bitter truth about her life. Being an orphan wanted to be adopted only to be betrayed by the world that crushed the soul of the little girl.
Nevertheless, as I mentioned before, Katie was not as old as she appeared to be nor did she look like someone who would have a history of substance abuse.
A Young Dog’s Struggle
Rocky, the renowned pet rescue advocate, recognized Katie’s true age. Despite her appearance, she was barely a year old. Found wandering the streets, she lacked ID tags or a microchip. A nobody, abandoned by everyone. Rocky knew he needed a unique approach to gain her trust.
Building Trust, One Treat at a Time
Katie did not believe in people anymore, but Rocky had the opposite goal for her. They talked for hours, he held her hand and shared some tidbits of food — very mundane acts that for once were profound. Katie hesitated, then accepted.
Rocky surged on staying in a bite-by-bite approach of winning the trust. At length everything became livable and for the first time since the operation Katie’s heart was recreated and hope dawned in her eyes.

One of those days Katie has something very special — a toy’s squeaking sound. Rocky offered her a stuffed unicorn blanket. Happiness abounded her face; they were her first toy ever. That unicorn made her feel like a little puppy, which she carried somewhere with only a hope for a better life.
Approaching a wary dog requires trust. Rocky took a risk, reaching out to Katie. Would she allow him to touch her? The answer would define her journey from despair to joy.
